How We Implement Change through Create Austell

When initially getting involved with the city, there was a common saying, "We want to keep Austell like Mayberry", referencing the 1960's American sitcom "The Andy Griffith Show". What I thought this to mean was that these residents didn't want change. While this was true for some, what I began to understand this to mean was not that people were completely against change, but rather they wanted to maintain a well connected community as we grow. There was a desire for both a breath of fresh air throughout the city while also preserving an environment where you know your neighbor. And while the internet has provided many advantages, it's also sped up both loneliness and physical separation among some of its users.

In comes, Create Austell! At Create Austell we help implement change by providing an in-person and online social advocacy group. We help connect various community stakeholders and mobilize them around issues that positively impact the quality of life and economic viability of the City of Austell, its citizens, and stakeholders.

At its core, Create Austell is a social group. We know that in order to build a strong community, it's imperative that neighbors know each other. In that same vein, we know the way the city is built can help in that matter or deter from it. With that in mind, we focus on providing education on how to grow our city in a way that achieves that mission, and provide plenty of opportunities for neighbors to connect through numerous events.

How We Chose Where To Focus

A brief explanation of Create Austell's why

Housing/ Zoning

It all starts with zoning! Zoning determines how communities are built. Zoning determines where housing goes, how homes are built, what types of homes are built, where stores and shops go, etc. By updating outdated zoning regulations, Austell can encourage much needed mixed-use development, allowing for a blend of residential, commercial, and recreational spaces within neighborhoods. This flexibility not only promotes walkability and reduces traffic congestion but also supports local businesses and amenities. Zoning reform can also address issues of affordability and inclusivity by enabling the development of diverse housing options, including affordable housing units and mixed-income developments.

Additionally, it can promote sustainability by encouraging the use of green spaces, renewable energy sources, and sustainable building practices. Overall, zoning reform can empower us to adapt to changing needs, enhance livability, and foster a more equitable and resilient Austell.​

Sustainability

When thinking of sustainability, we had two thoughts in mind. First, and most importantly is building a city that is in-line with nurturing the planet we all live on. We want to engage in practices that are the most sustainable for Earth and the ecosystem. You can turn on the news on see the beginnings of climate change wreaking havoc across the country. We want to keep this top of mind when choosing how to grow the city.

​Second, is growing the city in a way that is economically sustainable. So as infrastructure needs to be replaced, the revenue received from property taxes is able to cover its replacement and the city can provide quality, reliable services for generations to come.

Mobility

By providing alternatives to personal vehicles, such as public transit, biking, walking, e-scooters/ e-bikes, and ride-sharing services, Austell can reduce congestion, lower pollution levels, and improve air quality.

​Additionally, diverse mobility options promote social equity by ensuring that people of all income levels have access to transportation. This fosters a more inclusive urban environment where everyone can participate in economic and social activities. Overall, embracing varied mobility options contributes to a healthier, more livable city for all its inhabitants. ​

Arts/ Culture

Arts and culture enriches cities in myriad ways. It fosters creativity, stimulate economic growth, and enhance community well-being. Through galleries, theaters, museums, and public art installations, cities become vibrant cultural hubs that attract tourists and residents alike.

​Beyond entertainment, arts and culture contribute to education, fostering critical thinking and empathy. It also promotes social cohesion by providing shared experiences that transcend boundaries of age, ethnicity, and background. Moreover, investment in arts and culture generates jobs, revitalizes neighborhoods, and boosts property values.

​Ultimately, embracing arts and culture enhances the quality of life and identity of a city, making it a more dynamic and appealing place to live, work, and visit.​
